It's Time to Get Connected

  -- updated: 28 DECEMBER 2017

In case you didn't already know, the Dept of VA increasingly uses the Web and Facebook to broadcast daily updates, news, info, etc. The Post Adjutant also sends information through email. The reason is obvious:  less paper, less message traffic, faster distribution, better engagement and so on. Better, faster, cheaper communications benefits those who are connected. But you knew that because you are reading this. You can help by passing the word on to Post members who complain about being uninformed.

Key comm channels you should know and use:

Hampton National Cemetery

I work at the Hampton National Cemetery. Since I have started here I have found that many veterans are unaware of the burial benefits that are available to them. Our veterans and their spouses and minor children are eligible for a free burial plot and headstone in a national cemetery. Unfortunately we are a closed cemetery, meaning we do not actively hold interments, but from time to time a gravesite that is relinquished because of an event such as a veterans spouse that got remarried. That still doesn’t leave a lot of promise for space here at our cemetery. Good news is the state of Virginia operates a Veterans cemetery in Suffolk and the eligibility is exactly the same. Only difference is an administrative fee for spouse/child.

I know this is not a benefit that most of us like to think about, but it can save our loved ones a lot of money. Click here for more info on burial benefits:

I would also like to inform you all of the “Wreaths across America” event we have coming up December 16th, 2017. The event is being coordinated by our local chapter of the Navy Wives Club of America. They have set a goal of 33,000 wreaths and we currently have 534 sponsored. As I said before, we are a closed cemetery so we do not get a lot of family members pledging wreaths as they do in Suffolk. We like to ensure our Veterans here are not forgotten and they get the honors they deserve. We also could use some volunteers to lay the wreaths. Please see the link below for more info and to volunteer and/or donate wreaths.

If you have any questions about the benefits available or any questions about our cemetery please feel free to contact me.

Thank you,
